Using Video Conferencing to Expand Your Client Reach

In today's fast-paced world where we are regularly on-the-go, many of us are finding ourselves feeling overwhelmed and living in a state of chronic stress.  Between the demands of work, family, and social obligations, it can feel impossible to find time to think, let alone add another appointment to our calendars.  This constant state of communication and the belief that we should be connected 24/7 has caused a shift away from the traditional work structure, with many people are working remotely, keeping odd or fluid hours, or traveling to meet the needs of their business.  All of these factors can make it difficult for clients who need it most to find the time to receive the support they so desperately need.

As a clinician, how do you adjust to the new demands of client’s modern lifestyles?

One way to address this issue is to utilize the ability to connect with clients through online resources, such as Skype or Google Hangouts.  These tools allow practitioners to meet with clients regardless of their location.  This approach not only allows for greater flexibility in meeting with clients, but it also reduces the likelihood of a client having to reschedule their appointment, should their schedule change last minute.  The use of-of online video calling allows for a direct, visual connection, maintaining the personal aspects of an in-person session often lost via phone call.

The ability to make eye contact isn’t the only benefit of this virtual medium.  It expands the depth of the session by providing a means for assessing body language and other non-verbal cues to add insight to the interaction.  This method also increases the productivity of the meeting, by delivering a level of accountability.  For a session to be useful, each party must be fully present.  Being able to see the other person ensures that they are devoting their full attention, instead of trying to multi-task - a common practice during phone calls that we are all guilty of from time to time.
