“I help high achieving individuals and families navigate their most challenging times.” Dr. Jeffery Smith has spent his career studying how people heal and grow through emotional crises and turning points. He is one of those psychiatrists who is as much at home with in-depth psychotherapy as with medications. Author of four books for lay people and professionals, his forthcoming work, Launchpad to Adulthood, is aimed at helping families with the current epidemic of “adultescents” struggling to enter today’s world. He provides services in French as well as his native English.
Dr. Smith has worked extensively with trauma, addiction, eating disorders, relationship problems, life crises, and difficult situations in work. He has taught psychotherapy at New York Medical College and other Westchester institutions. As an entrepreneur in the 1990s, he established and operated Westchester’s first evening intensive addiction program for higher functioning clients.
The hills behind Silicon Valley were where Dr. Smith spent his early years. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, he decided to become a therapist. He earned his degree in Humanities then attended UCLA School of Medicine. To cement his medical knowledge, he interned in Internal Medicine in Syracuse, NY, then, seeking the finest training in psychodynamic psychiatry, did his residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following his training, he established an office in Scarsdale, NY, where he continues in full time practice.
He is a trustee of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry and Newsletter Editor of SEPI, the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration. He lectures at local and national meetings and his blog, www.howtherapyworks.com helps the general public understand and make better use of their psychotherapy.
